Eric Carle and his amazing book The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I don’t remember how old I was when I first read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but I do remember that it was my favorite childhood book. I always kept it on my nightstand, right next to my bed. My mom had a tan colored tote bag with The Very Hungry Caterpillar drawing on it and I would constantly steal it from her and carry my copy of the book around in it.

My favorite part of The Very Hungry Caterpillar has always been the fruit page with the little cut out holes. I thought it was so cool how Eric Carle designed it so it almost looked like a flip book to show how much the caterpillar ate each day. I always found it satisfying how the holes lined up perfectly as I turned the pages.

Eric Carle was an outstanding American author who wrote and illustrated many books that are still loved by children all over the world today. Carle was born in 1929 in New York, to two German immigrant parents. He moved back to Stuttgart when he was 6, and he spent most of his childhood there. Growing up in Nazi, Germany
was difficult for him. His father was drafted into the German army in WWII. He eventually moved back to New York in 1952 and worked as a graphic designer.

In 2015, his wife Barbara passed away and Eric Carle moved to Florida to be closer with family. He passed away on May 23, 2021, at the age of 91 due to kidney failure.

Eric Carle wrote over 70 books in his life and sold over 170 million copies. Some of my top books written by him are Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, The Very Busy Spider, and of course, my favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. He was important in my life because he wrote one of the first books I’ve loved. The colorful pictures and simple story made reading feel exciting for me as a kid. His stories showed me how books can be creative and fun, and I’ll always remember it.
